--- Good to hear from you and how are you doing? The USAKF is not the Olympic member any more because of a pretty hard fight from the Thiry group and the lack of money to continue on the part of the USAKF. As you know, we completed the job of getting karate into the Pan Am Games and then ran out of resources and were vulnerable to a takeover. All that being said, we are still doing very well and are really making headway in being the keeper of the traditional karate and a strong voice in the USA. We have established a strong Hall of Fame, are still holding the Nationals, and have sponsored the new US Ju-Jitsu Federation which is involved in the World Games and on its way to Olympic recognition. By the way, Abigail Williams from Morgantown/New Castle was my Grandmother. Her father was Thomas Williams.

I would like to keep informed about national and international goodwill trips for young Karate-ka and families. As I am a custodial grandmother, I would also like to know if there are funding assists available. My medical pension doesn't stretch far. My grandson is only six but is already a Tiger Brown Belt and has decorated our home with his many trophies and plaques. I am looking for this information now so that I can help him in his activities. I know that many sports events require advance planning to participate and that qualification for some competition means attending the right competitions sometimes in the right order. I have no desire to push him further than he wishes to go, but I don't want him unable to qualify for desired events because I was uniformed. Thank you. Vivian Nelson

---The main thing with kids is that they need a lot of reinforcement from their peer and family. You are apparently giving him the family support but the peer support must come from group activities, friends made from those activities, and role models in those activities. Keep him doing things with the karate group such as seminars, celebrations, grading meetings, camps, and last but not least, competition activities

---At the beginning there was only the brown belt and the black belt. As the gyms grew it was necessary to distinguish between the different groups of students. That set in place the 10 grade steps to the first black belt. The colors are unimportant, it is the grade level that counts.

Hi there--I recently read the comments regarding my wife's lawsuit on your website. As the facts were all wrong. I wondered why didn't any of you check with me. Perhaps the glee in writing some dirt on USANKF clouded your judgement. Btw, lets see if you print my comments. I hope you will. In 1996 my wife Ilyse earned the right to represent the USA in the WKF world championships held in S. Africa. She fought in the kilo division and Coach Tokey Hill wrote that she fought better than any of the women on the team. She won a few matches before losing to a the bronze medal winner. But the womens team was not entered because Thiry thought that "the women may get hurt" although disappointed she didn't say anything. In 1998 she once again earned the right to be a member of the womens team(this time only qualifying in the team category) travelling to Brazil, naturally at her own expense. The NIGHT BEFORE the women's team event was scheduled, coach Tokey Hill pulled the team out from the competition (the reasons are murky and under dispute) noe Ilyse was really disappointed. A day or two later when she had a chance to speak to Thiry, she voiced her disappointment to him he told her that if she didn't like the decision, "well you can all ways file a grievance" this was perhaps not the best thing to advise Ilyse as she is a litigation attorney. Well she filed her motion which is at this time marked for trial. As a result of my wife's action I was suspended from the chairmanship of the referee council and even as a referee in the USANKF. But the USAKF never had a better record at protecting the athletes rights or the officials rights, which is why YOU LOST THE NGB STATUS. The sad truth is that almost every leader of the traditional karate movement upon gaining power forgets the athletes and concentrates only on maintaining power

THIS IS WHY THE USA DOES NOT DOMINATE THE INTERNATIONAL KARATE SCENE!!!!!!! Its so self serving for any one to gloat at troubles within the NKF or the USAKF or the a au but we all do the same karate and i believe we STILL HAVE MORE THAT UNITES US THAN WHAT DIVIDES US! TO BE HONEST THE USAKF NEVER ONCE FIELDED A TEAM THAT WAS SPONSORED FINANCIALLY. Neither did the USANKF. Both groups conveniently forget the MOST IMPORTANT THING

--Dear Alex, As you can see, we are printing your letter untouched except for a few changes in capitalization because you wrote mainly in lowercase.

As usual, you present thing in a very interesting manner, to say the least. You should be aware that we print nearly all material that is sent to us for distribution if it is suitable for a site read by young people and if it is a point of view, and not a viscous personal attack. You should also note that our many differences with you are not personal. We received the notes published and thought them newsworthy. We do note gloat at problems within the USANKF and in fact, I have many members of my personal organization structure competing in the USANKF as well as in the USAKF. However, it is true that for personal reasons, the USANKF does not fit into my group of favorite sports federations. However, I am not bent out of shape about it and appreciate that many fine people are involved. And I am not at all happy to see that the karate group representing the USA in the Olympic of the USA has troubles of any kind. I would like to see it move forward for the good of all.

Now, if you want a more complete story about your troubles/tribulations/victories/plaudits/accomplishments, please do not hesitate to send them here and we promise not to gloat, giggle or sneer. Hi there, As you know the NKF answer to Ilyse's lawsuit was a motion to dismiss her lawsuit based on the grounds that because the NKF does not receive money from the federal government or the USOC it is not bound by the same anti-discrimination laws and therefore no one can sue it in a court of law.(in other words it can discriminate and your only remedy is to file a grievance in the usankf?) Well, a judge in Federal Court in N.Y. disagreed and issued an order allowing Ilyse to go ahead and proceed to trial. this is a big setback for ....[The NKF leadership}....and a major victory for ATHLETES RIGHTS and all the members of the USANKF. I recall back in 94' when we were trying to convince the USOC that we (usankf) should be trusted with the NGB our motto was DONT FORGET ITS ATHLETES RIGHTS STUPID!!!

In a curious development, ....[The NKF argued].... that the NKF does not receive any federal or USOC monies, [and said] that the USANKF received (get this) $100,000 from BUDWEISER AND TEXACO and not the USOC.(Remember the Budweiser and Texaco logos on the brochures for the nationals). I am sure you share my curiosity and join me in asking ....>>>>>>WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT MONEY???????? <<<<<<< Did the athletes receive funding to the world championships??? ......Did the referees have their way paid ?? ....Did the members of the USANKF benefit? ........DID [they].... I'm sure you have to be a black belt, and I would like to know if you could give me some information on USA Karate and what I need to know. I really want to be a champion in karate and I'm successful at karate tournaments, but I want more than karate tournaments. With your help I hop e I can reach my upmost highest goals in karate! I have been saying all along that the USAKF should be the NGB for the USA and this news only convinces the Global Martial Arts Federation membership this judgment is appropriate. The major problem we seem to have in the martial arts community is the appointed leadership at times forgets; without the athletes and schools supporting the efforts of unifying the sport under the Olympic flag there is no Olympic movement. Taekwondo ( WTF) and Judo ( Olympic) are perfect examples of what happens when the schools and athletes are forgotten or taken advantage of by those that wish to discriminate or impose a monopolistic business practice that limits the growth of the arts we so dearly adore and devote our lives to. I always believe that the senior black belts should be managing the martial arts sports and the junior black belts should follow the dictates of the seniors. Moreover, lets not forget that the student learns from the seniors physically demonstrating, just as they learn honesty, integrity and loyalty from the same demonstration. I have a question for you. It shows on your webpage that Byung in Yoon resurfaced in 1995 in North Korea. May I ask where he is today? Is he still in North Korea? Is he okay? I know that I have asked several questions but you see my former teacher Pyung Soo Kim of Houston Texas has been searching for his whereabouts since the Korean War. His teachers were Grandmasters; Park Chull Hee and Nam Suk Lee. As you know they were students of Grandmaster Byung in Yoon. Any help as to his current condition would be greatly appreciated.

I am interested in registering for the National Championships to be held July 14 - 16, 2000 in Canton, OH. I have read the registration information on your web site and still have a few specific questions as to my personal situation. 1. I believe that the only forms that are necessary are (a) the registration form (from the PDF format), (b) a copy of my birth certificate, (c) the Amateur Athletic Waiver and Release of Liability (which is not in the documents in PDF format but which I copied from the text version on your web site), and (d) the Participation Sports Exam (in PDF format). Is this correct? 2. I am 46 years old and have been training for less than 1 year. I know to check 45 & over, Beginner and General Kata, but what kumite division do I select, since there is no indication of a senior kumite division? 3. Even though I am 46 and a beginner, I have competed in several tournaments in the general 35+ age bracket and with the beginner/novice division. I have no desire to be in a division that only has two or three competitors in it. Should I select age 45 & over - beginner (which is exactly what I am), or is it more likely that there will be more competitors in some other senior category (such as Senior 35 & over - Novice)? I don't want to get in too far over my head (such as in the Adult 18 & over divisions), but I truly want to know how I am doing so some meaningful number of competitors would be desirable. Your input on this issue would be greatly appreciated. 4. If I get to the competition and discover that there only one or two competitors in my division, is it possible to switch into a different division at the tournament itself? ----The USA Karate was in use a long time ago a dojo name. We don't hassle too much over the use of the name but they are not us. We also had a USA Karate of Texas as our Regional Sports Organization and it was run by Don Coslet. In aggravated cases we will sue if necessary.

I do not mind that the private conversation between Master Dussault and myself is posted on your site, however Sir, the statement below found on your website (in <<) is an incorrect quote of me, this is something I did not state and I request that you please remove it from your site. To clarify, I what I stated: I, as USA group leader, was the first of a group of 18 non Korean born American graduates of the 1st Foreign Instructor’s Qualification Training Course held at Kukkiwon in July of 1998, to earn a master-instructor’s license (certificate) issued by Kukkiwon, World Taekwondo Academy. There were approximately 90 attendees from 38 nations at this course. The graduation photograph, as well as the USA group photograph is available at www.deestkd.com under Korea Pictures. There are thousands of Korea born Persons with instructor’s license from Kukkiwon and at least over a 100 non Korean born instructors by now, since the 2nd Foreign Course took place this past July (1999). ---I really don't know of any colleges that give scholarships in Karate these days. I really think that instructors probably would push their own students ahead if there were that kind of benefit. However, you are not the first that would like to pursue a higher level and get credit for it. It is a real shame that the martial arts in the USA cannot get together to do anything.

Dear Mr. Anderson, Good to hear from you, hope all is going well. I did not attend the NKF nationals but had several black belts that went and they reported to me that there were maybe 1000 competitors. You know how they can inflate numbers by adding all the people that did kumite and then add all those that did kata and then kobudo to get there total competitors and all. :) I haven't done much with the NKF since I resigned as General Secretary. Sport karate only made up about 10% of the interests of my students and I haven't missed the expense of traveling to support the cause. When the USA Karate Federation was running the show, I felt that the American teachers had a fair shake. Once Thiry took over, a definite Japanese flavor took over. Having a background in Taekwondo under Pat Burleson and later a Chinese Kempo and Okinawan Shorin Ryu lineage, I knew I was always a second class citizen with the NKF. Unless your Japanese or at least have a Japanese Sensei you will always be treated differently under the current administration. I know that American Karate has great roots, great teachers and excellent potential in is athletes. To limit the participation to only one select group is a pity, and truly hurts us internationally I think. In the late 60's and early 70's Texas (blood and guts) karate was a power house, and to see these individuals discriminated against is a travesty and that is why I refuse to support an organization that is filled with prejudices and biases. I am sorry to hear that there was problems in the referee core, because that is where our students can get hurt. I remember when Igaki got drunk, tore up his referee license in front of everyone and threatened to beat up Sensei Tanaka of Alaska. I voted to kick him out of the federation for his actions, but Thiry ended up promoting him to head coach due to his connections. What a web we weave in the political arena, huh? As far as the problems with New York, I am sure that everyone knows that he did something against Thiry. Thiry has retaliated in the typical method and is trying to destroy him. Out of the 4 original vice presidents of the NKF, Alex Sternberg, Carl Hultin, Dan Kennedy and Gary Tsutsui , only Gary remains active today. The rest have been forced out because they were not enough of a yes man to fit in with the Hayashi-Ha methodology.--Should the current administration change, or should the USA Karate decide to take back the NGB position so that a grassroots effort to take care of its members, then I might reconsider my evolvement at the national level. I am writing in response to some very erroneous information that you have allowed to be posted on your web site concerning the 2001 USA-NKF Nationals. First of all the OFFICIAL competitor count was just at 4,500. That is competitors only and does not include spectators and support staff. As for the bit about the USA-NKF of New York, it is clear that you do not have all of your facts straight on that issue, so there is no reason to fill in the gaps of your knowledge with falsehoods. It is extremely unprofessional and disrespectful as a martial artist to post information like that which clearly only has a defamatory intent. As far as athlete interest and selection go, be assured that the best interest of the athletes and the selection of the best team to represent the United States is the top priority of the USA-NKF. For anyone who doesn't believe the best team was selected, I would like to see the fighter who could beat George Kotaka, Jim Buchen, or any of the current US Team members. Ask yourself if you think these aren't the best people because they really aren't, or if your person was beaten, and you are upset by that.As for the added comment about the refereeing, I don't know what tournament that whoever posted this attended. This was by far one of the best tournaments in history for referees with no major injuries, and a very low number of minor ones. A view from a tape can be quite different that the one in the ring, and I challenge anyone who thinks they can do better to join me in the Referee Course next year, and help us all to see better as referees.Finally, I would like to clarify the Doug Pelinkovic issue. Mr. Palenkovic was did receive shikaku for the period of five years. The allegation that he assaulted members of the Referee Council are very incorrect, and whoever posted these obviously is misinformed. Anyone interested in the full details of Mr. Pelinkovic's shikaku, can and should contact the USA-NKF National Office for the public report of the occurrence.I would like to sum up in saying that I feel it is extremely unporfessional for an organization to post negative comments about another organization in a monitored public forum, such as this one. It does damage to both groups, and to karate-do as an art. Please eliminate future incidents like this one, so we may see karate-do grow and achieve the place it truly deserves in the greater community of sport.

We really have no experience in the business of national federation (Ha!) and it is refreshing for you to lecture us on intent and content. We are sure you are indeed an expert on such matters. We have no interest in defaming the National Governing Body for karate at all and are sorry if you do not agree with what we post. If you would be so kind as to set us straight, we will post your response.
We are sure that there are gaps in our knowledge. Why wouldnt there be? Where do you post ALL the information that is of interest to the entire USA regarding OUR national governing body for Karate? If you have such a place, we will visit it, but until that time comes, we rely on what we consider RELIABLE sources. The NY fuss is of interest to everyone in Karate and we are sure that the major magazines will discover it in due course without our assistance.

Regarding the size of an event, the true size of all tournaments is a question and we have a perfect right to comment on it.

We are used to counting crowds and our estimates have absolutely nothing to do with who we send to compete. Would you rather we did not compete? Why would you think we are so interested?

We feel that we keep an even and fair hand on our organization and we post information that is of interest to our group and many others. Everything the NKF does is of interest, both good and bad. We like commentaries from people like you but we cannot let you dictate our standards and tell us what to do. That is just like the Democratic Party telling the Wall Street Journal what to publish.
For the general tone of your letter, we do not feel superior, inferior, hostile of friendly to you. We are not involved with your operations and seek no influence. For the most part, we feel that people like you represent and show the true interests of your organization. And, I might add, we know little about you, although you and you club are on our mailing list. If you see me at any future event, it would be nice if you would come up and say Hello.

I would like to sum up by saying we with the NKF good luck in representing the USA in the Olympic related events and we are sorry that you take our posting as negative in nature, when actually it is not so.

Comment--- I am responding to the letter in your Message area about PSP. This is my experience with the USMA and Phil Porter: I have been a member of the USMA since 1997. I joined at that time because I felt the President of another association had promoted me to Yondan too soon. I joined the USMA along with two other associations to feel them out. So far they all have there strengths and weaknesses. As for the USMA, I have found that in the years that I have been a member, Phil Porter is the only one in the Organization that is really doing anything. " That is the FACT". Allot of these other High Ranking Directors are, and were quick to use Phil Porter and the USMA's name, but do zilch for the Organization. The USMA had a seminar calendar where all USMA members could place their events, seminars, etc. I only observed a few entries, and they were not even USMA instructors. I have personally contacted several of the instructors in an attempt to further my training, but they would not even take the time to respond back to me? One other question I have? I do not see any of these Black Belts that Jumped ship, so to speak giving up the ranks they earned from Phil Porter? Matter of fact some of their ranks increased immediately after they left the USMA? It has always amazed me that everyone else's rank was sold or given to them.I, on the other hand, did resign my former ranks when I left my previous association. And yes, 5 years after my Sandan and 3 years after joining the USMA, I was promoted by Phil Porter ( recognized by my first Sensei ) to Yondan.

The only reason I have responded is that I am tired of associations breaking up and then trash talking each other. If it was not for this and egos, just maybe we would have one strong governing body for Karate in the USA. But, that would prevent all these Grandmasters from making money and controlling their own Organization? I never met Grandmaster Trias, but I have on a couple of occasions got to spend some time with Allen Steen. Two great men who had a vision for American Karate and Tae Kwon Do. I understand that the USAKF is a fine upstanding, well respected Organization, so I was a little surprised when I observed this letter authorized for publication. USAKFAnswer --- Thanks for your letter and I will post it also. The posting to which you refer was not written by us and was a comment received and does not reflect editorial policy. Now that that is said, we do have some difficulty understanding the reasoning behind the following.

What is it that you do not understand about why many important leaders are doing nothing for the USMA. What is it that you think they should be doing, and why do you think they appear to be distancing themselves from the organization? Does the USMA has the proper credential to issue grade in styles in which they have no great knowledge and is it true that held grades, particularly the honorary kind, bestow no qualification for the authority to issue grade.

Is there a violation of standard protocol when trusted organizations directly contact students of major sensei for the purpose of awarding higher grade?
Should the USMA or any other organization award grade without the due process of examination and investigation of the candidate by someone highly respected in the particular discipline. Are people wrong when they state that in all non-profit organizations the funds must be accounted for publicly? Do you really think that the USJA has broken up and that organization split off from the USMA? These questions have been asked of us many many times and we have refrained from commentary. Why don't you illuminate us, and we will see the word gets out.

When you talk about Grandmaster Trias, you should be careful to to note a direct quote or whether it is your own opinion of how he thought. He consulted with me often and deeply and his opinions were the same as mine and are reflected for you in the above questions.

For there being only one organization, you got to be kidding. There are different faces to the arts and the grading is different for each one. Why don't you go to TKD or the USA-NKF and see how friendly they are about awarding grade? We are certain that you would be examined most carefully. As for making money, it is a sad fact that each grandmaster who devotes his complete time to his family must be able to live and pay bills and that the money must come from the family. If that is wrong, what do you suggest? That the teacher stop concentrating on the family and clean tables at the local restaurant? Best Regards, for Real, USAKF

Comment on Repy --- I think I need to make some clarifications. 1) I in no way intended to imply that I knew Grandmaster Trias!!!! From my reading and understanding of him, I feel he had a great vision for the future of Karate. If my statement was taken that way, I "apologize". 2) Nor did I mean to imply that a Grandmaster should not make money. That is why I do not feel it is wrong for Phil Porter to pay himself a large salary out of USMA funds. From "my" observations he is the one earning it. I merle meant to say, " I have noticed that as soon as these Grandmasters leave an association they begin to bad mouth it", possibly to get members to switch to their organization. This usually is accompanied with, " that guy is selling ranks ". He is running " a belt mill ". He as no " authority "to issue that rank.

I am not just defending Phil Porter or the USMA. Where does it stop? An association that I belonged to stated in a large group of Black Belts that Robert Trias had to buy his ranks in Japan? Can you believe this? (One of the many reasons I resigned from his group. That and I would be about a 7th Dan now.) The KTA and it instructors said it about Jhoon Rhee? I have been to AAU and USA-NKF tournaments where I over herd some of the Officials saying similar things about your Organization. I can go on and on. I usually just ignore these people, but they did not put it in writing.

Now my turn to ask a few questions???? Why is it that one of the Associations that broke from the USMA offered to Certify my rank, but it was only cost me a couple of hundred dollars? No retest???? Just "money"!!!!! How is it that this new association now has the authority to rank me? How can a 6th Dan Jujitsu (now 7th Dan) take a 10th Dan away from one Grandmaster and issue it to another? (Same association). If someone excepts a Directorship in an association, are they not lending their rank and authority to that association? Because of these questions and yours, who I am to believe? I am just a no body Black Belt from Texas who does not want politics, just fair and honest treatment. This in no way is meant to be disrespectful to your association and/or leaders. I have the highest respect for the USAKF and its leadership. Maybe that is why I was so taken back by the letter. Thank you, again, for your time.

USA Reply to Comment on Repy ---Dear Robert, Thanks for the reply and your careful explanation. They are well taken and your views parallel ours in most respects. I think that you have a good grasp of the situation, but nonetheless, I would like to add a few comments. By the way, I am especially fond of Texas, I went to grade school in Houston in 1937, my brother is buried in the US Air Force Cemetery in WACO and his family lives in Houston, my cousins are prominent figures in the Texas Lottery, and my general secretary of the USAKF is from West Texas.

I do agree that Phil Porter is entitled to proper compensation as declared by his organization but it should be open knowledge as is required for all non-profits.

Bob Trias never paid a nickel for certificates from Japan and Masafumi Suzuki issued USA certificates for no charge. There was a consideration, however, certificates were issued from USA to Japan such as making Suzuki a honorary Mayor of Miami, and the covering of their expenses to the USKA Grand Nationals. I know this to be true as I was in charge of the certifications.

For the USAKF, we never promote unless it is under a review by the entire technical sections pertinent to the style. For Shotokan, it was Takayuki Mikami and for the Goju, was Mario Higiaonna. The USAKF, like the Pan American Union and the WUKO did homologate grades, that is they would issue certification based on the same grade issued by legitimate organizations such as the ISKF, JKA, etc. The cost for a dan grade has always been $150 for any grade, which to any large organization is mere pocket change. The USAKF would not homologate all grades from many organizations such as the USKA because they were not up to accepted international standards. Robert Trias himself was refused over 8th Dan by the WUKO and he decided to forgo the pleasure of WUKO grade altogether. The idea of homologation is sound and followed world wide. It simply means that the grade is or is not accepted by the newly issuing organization. The USAKF has refused to homologate grades issued by some groups without really careful investigation. Students of Mikami, Ochiai, Okazaki, Chinen, Nakayama, Nishiyama, Thiry, Demura, Byrnes, Nanay, etc., need no further checking, but those of Joe Six-pack might. It depends entirely upon our technical committee to check the papers. As is often said, any applicant should have been often tried, never denied, and be willing to be tried again.

When one accepts a directorship from an organization, there is an obligation to keep it on a respectable course. Ranking and certification are, unfortunately, an important part of any martial arts organization and we all try to keep the quality up, to the best of our ability. This is hard when people fool around in and claim expertise in areas in which the are technically untrained and unknowledgeable. Honorary grade do not bestow any qualification. One problem with jujitsu is the figuring out of exactly what it is. Remember that the USJJ represents the International Union of the Olympic family (World Games) which is a huge international federation with millions of members and great standards.
Ranking in the JJ International Federation requires expertise in kicking and punching and other highly ballistic techniques. Judo people sometimes have a hard time with this and even if they claim high dan in their own world, that does not mean they are qualified according to international standards. 7th dan and over are too high grades to agree to and issue if the applicant is deficient in these standards, kicking and punching is required almost to karate standards. Get the technical charts and look for yourselves. Because of this, the USJJ does not accept the grade of many 10th degree grand masters, and the USAKF does not, at this time, issue any grade higher than 9th, and has no plans to do so.

Both organization are stand alone. The USAKF does not issue jujitsu grade and the USJJ does not issue karate grade. To me, it is ridiculous that a judoka thinks that they that the ability to determine if a karate grade advancement is due and if so upgrade student of a serious teacher, the ones that do deserve all the problems that the get. The same can be said for karate or kempo practitioners. Now, the USJJ has benn around for some time, the USJA, the USJF, the USKA, the USKK, the AAU all are old repected groups with really good overseers, and probably all of them think that the USMA is short on most accounts, except for the highly qualified judo teacher who is the leader. You ask “Because of these questions and yours, who I am to believe?”
There are no “ nobody” black belts. All the seniors were, at one time, beginners. We are just older? Our advise is to keep practicing and stay respected and legitimate the best you can. Please understand that the national federations are peopled by good men and women who try to do their best, and is a fact that we all attempt to stay with what we know. I have given you a lengthy answer because your letter to us struck a good note and your ideas are to the point and need an straight answer. We hope that we have done just that.

Answering a letter: Dear Sir, Good to hear from you! Unfortunately, a lot of disappointment with this fellow has spread across the USA. Seems he has has been selling "any rank" to "anyone" for some time. (All you need is money or a credit card to get rank from porter.) This fact is well known across the USA.

The primary reason he was kicked out of the USJA (physically forced & carried out of the USJA Building) was his extensive misuse of funds.. Unfortunately, we found that the USMA is simply his personal "retirement account' with no Finance Committee nor Public Board Meeetings, nor Real Program. In other words, no accountablity...

He is a Great "Car Salesman" but... He (hear that he) is currently under investigation by a federaral agency. He recently fired the USMA Finance Director after the accountant informed several USMA Board Members of what is happening. I have been informed the Financial Books have been impounded.... In the opinion of many...it is just a matter of time, before they arrest him or at least shut his program off...This is all very disappointing to many.. He could have done many Good Things if his Greed & Ego had not got in the way.

He appears to be on a "mission of vengence" against the NGB for Judo and any other organization that represents Technical Excellence & established Standards...

The fact that he promotes with no standards (nor authority from the many system organizations) has been "no favor" to the martial arts community. In fact, it has hurt the martial arts community.. His promoting people "behind the back" of many Sensei has caused many "bridges to be burned" between porter and others. I know that the above situation has caused many bad feelings toward his program. The above are Facts, not gossip.. Best advice,,, stay clear of that guy. However, some USMA Black Belts are very credible Martial Artists. Unfortunately, they have dropped alot of funds down the "bottomless porter pit" that only helps him, but does nothing to futher the development of Martial Arts in America. My suggestion, fInd another organization that is "doing something" for its members and is "furthering the development" of the martial arts"!

About the USA-NKF discussion e-group ---- We are hearing comments about karate's Olympic federation : Apparently the USA-NKF had an e-group where people spoke about any topic they wanted to. Well, a lot of people were putting down the USA-NKF and had complaints about the officials, medals etc.. Well, the Federation's communications manager was allegedly asked to turn off the e-groups. Apparently this was done, and now there is not electronic area in which to voice comments. Well, one federation leader had a argument with a higher-up and wanted to know why there was a shutdown order , This is America and we have the right to say what we want. Well, this fight got bigger, and the fuss moved up the ladder of command and finally reached the highest level. There was a big dispute, and the complainer resigned from the USA-NKF. He then is said to have started his own e-group using the USA-NKF logo and on the bottom stated that his site was done with the approval of the Technical Committee. (We haven't seen the site yet. Does anyone have an address for it?) He allegedly was then told to turn off his site and he did not. We hear legal action is a possibility. That certainly is interesting information about the Olympic Karate representative.

About the USA-NKF New York group --- We hear: That a potential 5 million dollar law suit against the USA-NKF is moving forward in New York. We hear that it arises from an unsatisfactory team placement for the wife of Alex Sternberg. Speaking of Alex, he and Tokey Hill apparently are having a real go-to. Tokey allegedly has started his own RSO in New York, and Alex is trying to convince everyone in New York to join his RSO. It is a nasty fuss going on.

About the USA-NKF Los Angeles group --- We hear:Also Yamazaki Sensei, Miyake Sensei and David Crockett have started their own RSO in southern California. This surely will create a huge problem for the USA-NKF. Several of the top Spanish Instructors in that area have sent out letters about these three Instructors which reportedly have gotten the Federation leadership upset.

What ever happened to Sam Brock? ----I know of and have met Sam Brock. My meeting with him was brief at a tournament in Springfield, IL. He led me to believe that he had retired from the martial arts because there was no money in it. Interesting! Sam taught me when he first started a school. I was in junior high (14 years old [1965] with a couple of other students who were also from East St. Louis, Illinois; they were two years older;). One other high school student who started after us was David Brownridge. We were brown belts and helped David who moved up to brown belt really fast (maybe 4-6 months; I never went past brown). Last time I saw Dave was 25 years ago in Champaign where he had settled and was making quite a bit of money (with 4 schools around Illinois). David was planning on becoming a millionaire by 30 (he was about 26 at the time). So, it's rather ironic that Sam, who taught David would quit because he couldn't make any money.

Thanks for telling me. I'm in Chicago in school and will have to look Sam up when I go home on the next break. He was a really good instructor and friend to us when we were teenagers (Sam was 24 when I started at 14 -kind of a kid himself in a way -sort of a big brother to us) I hope this helps you out. I have attended seminars, read my manual, and looked over my notes, all to little avail. You also asked me what style our system was based on. My response to that was equally uninformed. I view the history of my style as important, and I take my study of the Kwanmukan seriously. Would it be possible for you to help me with the lineage of your teachers, as well as understanding the origins and development of our style.I would very much like to be able to answer you with something more respectful than "duh" the next time I am asked about important aspects of our system. Just when I feel like I am starting to get a grasp on Cognitive Restructuring, I realize how little I know about our system. I may not be the best practitioner of karate that the Kwanmukan has to offer, but it would certainly be irresponsible of me if I did not continue to improve. i am associated with the Israel taekwondo association. Do you have, or know of any software to help run a martial arts (fighting matches, not patterns) competition ? we have our national taekwondo competition coming up in one month, and would be willing to purchase such software. We need the software to take age groups, divide each group into a competition pyramid, and allow us to keep track of winners and scores. If there is an associated database to allow seeding in future competitions, so much the better. We already have an Excel worksheet for running a patterns competition. Sirs, There has been a con man in Colorado Springs Colorado who opened/closed a karate studio near my house. He used the From USA Karate. I noticed that USA Karate is your registered trade From. Is he affiliated with your organization? If not perhaps you could put the word out over your website. You may also want to press charges if he is caught. He uses the From Master Steve Gordon (3rd deg.) and the From Ed Arnold (3rd deg.) also appears on his flyer. He has tried to pass himself as a Vietnam POW and gone so far as to be interviewed on national radio to collect contributions to open another studio in the area. When his studio was near my house I dropped in and he told me that part of his testing fees would go to Chuck Norris Karate to benefit drug addicted teens. These were all lies. I am a former student of the late Sensei Robert A. Trias. I am almost 60 years old and studied with sensei during 1956, 57, 58, and 59 when I entered the Army. During those days in Phoenix, Arizona, we had to study Judo for at least a year before learning a block, chop, punch, kick, or thrust. I never rose about 3rd degree “brown” belt, but studied Judo and taught self-defense after 1959 in the Army. I was the 6th person to become a member of the United States Karate Association, and still have that certificate, from about 1958 or 1959. What became of the United States Karate Association originated by the late Sensei Trias?

----I really don’t think that the men very close to GM Trias had a clue to what he was about. He talked to me a lot about the secession and wanted me to handle it, including setting up a USKA headquarters here in Ohio to stave off a run by Lentins and their group in Florida. I am in complete agreement with GM Trias about the links between judo and karate. The old timers are still in close touch, and I will soon meet again with Phil Koeppel. If you like, . I am contacting you in the hope that you would be able to share information with me concerning the Seibukan in Japan. I have been trying to find out if an organization called the “Dai Nippon Seibukan Budo/Bugei Kai “ exists in Japan and if so its address, but have been unsuccessful. I think it is in either Kyoto or Osaka. Supposedly it is an organization that has various divisions for different Japanese martial arts. A man named Kitahara Tatsuo Suzuki had been an official of this org. If not the President in the past. I am not really sure if this man exists. Would you please share an address for the Nippon Seibukan Academy and a little history of it and what arts it includes and is it considered an organization or Dojo ?I would greatly appreciate your sharing info. About the Nippon Seibukan Academy and if you have an knowledge of the Dai Nippon Seibukan Budo/Bugei Kai and its address in Japan or someone in Japan that I could contact who might be able to verify its existence. ----The Dai Nippon Seibukan was under Masafumi Suzuki, from whom I hold 9th dan and upon his death was to go to 10th, who died several years ago. I gave his main eulogy and met at that time with his son, Uyehara, and others of importance. Since then, there was a disagreement about the manner of continuance and I did not want to become involved. At the funeral, it was stated that “everyone should follow Hanshi Anderson, ” which of course was not possible. The Seibukan is in Kyoto and is the largest dojo there. It is still in operation. If you like, you can call me. And by the way, how did you get tangled up with PSP? You would really like the USJJ. Colorado USJJ runs out of the old Judo Institute.

Thank you for responding, and yes we do have similar martial arts roots and interests. I'd like to say that, I'm most impressed with the fine work you have done for Karate here in the USA, but also the dedication you have shown over so many years to help all martial artists. I'm certain that our paths had crossed many years ago either in Korea ( 60's ) or in the Mid West during the early 70's. During the years of 1968 to 1975 I had five studios in the Flint Michigan area and my students competed in Ohio many times. In 1975 I returned to Hawaii, finally moving to the Rowland Heights, CA area in 1991 to help my old friend Tan Tao Liang (his movie name is Delon Tan) in Korean his name is "Dam Do Rang" he was the all time poster boy for Chang Moo Kwan. I'm not sure if you know of him, there is a short but out dated Bio on him by Beijing Video on my page < http://members.aol.com/hmurphf/index4.html ( click Bio button )he was a supper star in the early 70's and was the leading star in 52 and played in over 200 films. Jackie Chan was his stand in double in the early days. As for the research I'm doing, I'm involved in several projects. 1) Korean old style Hyung identification and documentation of origin. 2) Recently the Senior Vice President of World Tae Kwon Do Federation admitted to me that the WTF had never really considered any historical research for WTF. That was a remarkable comment, since WTF claims to have a Historical Department. As you know full well WTF has tried to wipe out the true history such as Kong Soo Do, Kwon Bup, Tae Soo Do and Tang Soo Do. The WTF VP in turn put me in contact with Grand Master Bong Sik Kim of the Taekwondo Academy a new branch of WTF to work on research & documentation. Personally I've never ever taught or followed WTF's forms or system, just kept certification with them. 3) Is a movie documentary with a major production budget, the plan is that this project will be filmed in China, Okinawa, Japan and Korea. This is important, and it is my hope and desire that Grand Master Park Chull Hee will play a part in this. I've had meetings with the Director and Producer over the last few months and have convinced them that; the second group (1953-56) of Kwan Jangs have had just as important of a role and impact on the development of Korea's Martial Arts as the founding Kwan Jangs in 1945. If the project is be technically correct then nobody, style or system can be over looked. I saw in your web site a few months ago about Thomas LaPuppet's death. He was one of the nicest people around. I remember back in the mid 70's when I went to Brooklyn, New York with Victor Moore and we stayed with Mr. and Mrs. LaPuppet at their home. His wife was also extremely nice. I was from the South and used to people being very open to everyone. Mrs. LaPuppet would cook meals all the time and they both were just extremely good people. I have pictures from those times. Mr. LaPuppet came to Chicago and I have pictures Victor Moore, Thomas LaPuppet and Jimmie Jones at Mr. Jones' home. I have been meaning to email you and say thanks for remembering Mr. LaPuppet. I can see he was a good friend of yours.
