Notes on the Championship
Schedule of Events -- The below is our attempt to set a firm schedules for the Nationals. We hope it will cut the time that you will be waiting around and will expedite the overall affair. We will try to start the divisions at the appointed time and so that you do not have to come before then. We don't want the competition floor or spectator area clogged with competitors waiting for their turn to perform. The Competitor Setup Area up will be in a separate room off the gymnasium.

Complete Information on the USA Karate Nationals
What - The only official karate sports championships that is recognized by The USA Karate Federation and the Kobudokan.
Eligibility - All competitors must be residents of the USA. If you are in doubt of your eligibility, please call 330-753-3114 or email us. International Competitors may enter and compete in the International Championship upon paying all appropriate membership and entry fees.
Rules-USA Karate/WKF Rules We use the mirror system instead of flags.
Coaches - Coaches will not be allowed on the competition floor except for team divisions.
Equipment - Protective cups (male), mouthguard, and hand pads are mandatory. USA Karate will not supply this equipment. See your local representative if you have any questions. Kids can wear safety protection.
Uniforms - For competitors, white karate-gi only. A single patch may be worn on the karate-gi over the left breast.
Referees - USA Karate certified referees. There will be a Referee Course before the championship. Certified, referees can update for $50. Cost of the course, testing and certification for those requesting grading or upgrading is $100.
Awards - Beautiful USA Karate Championship medallions will be awarded for the first three places. In addition, all competitors will receive outstanding certificates of participation.
Karate All American Awards - Karate All American Awards for 2003 will be awarded at the National Championships.
Registration - Pre-registration is strongly recommended. Late applications may go first in kata events based on the date applications are received.
---The application must be completed and signed by your or your parent/guardian.
---Include proof of age (birth certificate if possible), small photo, and liability waiver. Birth certificates or other legal proof of age or citizenship must be sent in with the registration form. Once we have a copy on file, we will not require another one at future events.
---Competitor Passes - You must send a passport size photo with your application and you will receive a competitor pass. Competitors will be admitted free on days they do not compete with the pass. The pass contains valuable information on the divisions entered and a medical release form which must be completed and signed! If you send a self-addressed stamped envelope, we will return your pass to you by mail if received in time.
---We suggest that you send your application by registered mail to assure that you entry is received. If confirmation is desired, please send self-addressed stamped envelope.
Age and skill divisions follow USAKF rules and regulations for national events.
Rules - USA Karate/modified International rules and regulations apply. Mouth guards and groin protection (males) is required> Other acceptable optional protective equipment will be permitted in accordance with the Rules and Regulations. Protective equipment is allowed for children.
Air Travel - Both the Akron/Canton airport and the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport service the Akron/Canton area. We will announce an official airlines at a later date.
Spectators - contact USA Karate National Office - 1300 Kenmore Blvd. Akron, Ohio 44314. Tickets available at the door or by advance purchase by sending correct payment and a self-addressed stamped envelope to the above. Life members are free.
Banquet Tickets are available for the Friday night Hall of Fame and awards at the Headquarters Hotel -Radisson., Akron, OH --Cost are: $40 .

Instructions for Completing the Registration Forms

1. All forms must be completed and returned for entry. This includes the Registration Form (with competitors photo and waiver release), which must be filed only once per year (except when an injury or other medical emergency occurs and must be reported).
2. All forms must be completed and returned. This includes the Registration Form with competitors, photo and medical release, the Participants Sports Exam, which must be filed only once per year unless an injury or other medical emergency occurs, and the appropriate Adult or Minor Release of Liability.
Each item on the form is required for a purpose and must be completed. Please follow the below steps to avoid confusion.

Remember, you must compete in the same age and skill for all divisions entered! Exception, senior competitors may compete in adult kata and in senior kumite.

List of divisions - for the 2003 USA Karate Tournament Season
Each Junior Age group will compete separately and boys divisions are separate from girls divisions, except where noted in the division breakdowns. Skill divisions for kata and kumite are as follows: Ages 6-17 are beginner (under 1 year and 7th kyu or less), novice (1-2 years or green belt or 4, 5, and 6 kyu), intermediate (2-3 years or brown belt or 1,2, or 3 kyu), and advanced (over 3 years or black belt). Weapons kata divisions are 6-9, 10-13, and 14-17 beginner, novice, intermediate and advanced.
Adults are age 18 - 34. Divisions are separated by male and female. In kata there are beginner (under 1 year and 7th kyu or less), novice (1-2 years or green belt or 4, 5, and 6 kyu), intermediate (2-3 years or brown belt or 1,2, or 3 kyu), and advanced (over 3 years or black belt) divisions. In kumite for beginner, novice and intermediate, there is a light weight division (under 70 kilo) and a heavyweight division (over 70 kilo). Weapons kata divisions are beginner, novice, intermediate and advanced.
Senior Age Group divisions are separated by male and female. In kata and kumite there are beginner (under 1 year and 7th kyu or less), novice (1-2 years or green belt or 4, 5, and 6 kyu), intermediate (2-3 years or brown belt or 1,2, or 3 kyu), and advanced (over 3 years or black belt) divisions. Weapons kata divisions are beginner, novice, intermediate and advanced.
As per USA Karate Rules all matters regarding correct classification of athletes shall be referred to the USAKF Tournament Administration. Appeals shall be heard by the National USA Karate Registration Committee or elsewhere as outlined in the Constitution and By-Laws of The USA Karate Federation. Also at National Championships, published divisions will be offered and medals to four places will be given. If a division has 4 or less competitors (including only one competitor), the tournament promoter has the right to combine divisions.
