Explanations to help you complete the Registration Forms Return to top of page
1. General: All forms must be completed and returned for entry. This includes the Registration Form (with competitors, photo and medical release, the Participants Sports Exam, which must be filed only once per year unless an injury or other medical emergency occurs, and the appropriate Adult or Minor Release of Liability.
2.) Registration Form: Each item on the form is required for a purpose and must be completed. Please follow the below steps to avoid confusion.
Remember, you must compete in the same age and skill for all divisions entered! Exception, senior competitors may compete in adult kata and in senior kumite.
3) Age: Legal age for competition is the age of the competitor on July 1, 1998.
4) Experience: As of the date of the national championships.
4) Group Member: This is the organization you belong to that is a member of the USA Karate Federation.

Divisions - 1998 USA Karate Tournament Season Return to top of page
Each Junior Age group will compete separately and boys divisions are separate from girls divisions. Skill divisions for kata and kumite are as follows: Ages 6-17 are beginner (under 1 year and 7th kyu or less), novice (1-2 years or green belt or 4, 5, and 6 kyu), intermediate (2-3 years or brown belt or 1,2, or 3 kyu), and advanced (over 3 years or black belt). Age 16-17 advanced may compete in Adult WUKO Kata. If so, they do not compete in free kata in those age groups. Weapons kata divisions are 6-9, 10-13, and 14-17 beginner, novice, intermediate and advanced.
Adults are age 18 and over. Divisions are separated by male and female. In kata there are beginner (under 1 year and 7th kyu or less), novice (1-2 years or green belt or 4, 5, and 6 kyu), intermediate (2-3 years or brown belt or 1,2, or 3 kyu), and advanced (over 3 years or black belt) divisions. In kumite for beginner, novice and intermediate, there is a light weight division (under 70 kilo) and a heavy weight division (over 70 kilo). Weapons kata divisions are beginner, novice, intermediate and advanced. Note that adult advanced competitors may only compete in WKF Kata or Okinawan Kata or Kata.
In Senior Age Group divisions are separated by male and female. In kata and kumite there are beginner (under 1 year and 7th kyu or less), novice (1-2 years or green belt or 4, 5, and 6 kyu), intermediate (2-3 years or brown belt or 1,2, or 3 kyu), and advanced (over 3 years or black belt) divisions. Weapons kata divisions are beginner, novice, intermediate and advanced.
As per USA Karate Rules , all matters regarding correct classification of athletes shall be referred to the regional sports organization or administrator for your area. Appeals shall be heard by the National USA Karate Registration Committee . At league and national championships, published divisions will be offered and medals to four places will be given. If a division has 4 or less competitors (including only one competitor), that division will be held and medals will be given based on the results of that division.

What · The only official karate sports championships that is recognized by The USA Karate Federation.
Eligibility · Open to all karate practitioners. At the time of the competition, competitor can enroll as a USA Karate Federation member if they are not yet members., If you have not yet qualified at an approved and sanctioned qualifying event, then the USAKF National Office can approve your entry. If you have any question of this please call us at 330-753-3114 or email us.
International Competitors · International Competitors may enter and compete in the National Championships upon paying all appropriate membership and entry fees.
Rules · USA Karate/WKF Rules
Uniforms · For competitors, white traditional karate-gi only. Only a 4" (largest diameter) patch may be worn on the karate-gi over the left breast.
Coaches · Coaches must have certification to operate as a coach. Coaches will not be allowed on the competition floor. Up to two coaches will be permitted from a given territory for free admission. This is determined by your regional sports organization or representative.
Equipment · Protective cups (male), mouthguard, and hand pads are mandatory. USA Karate will not supply this equipment. See your local representative if you have any questions.
Referees · USA Karate certified referees. There will be a 1 day Referee Course before the championship. Certified referees can update for $10. Cost of the course, testing and certification for those requestion grading or upgrading is $50.
Awards · Coveted USA Karate Championship medallions will be awarded for the first four places. In addition, all competitors will receive outstanding certificates of participation.
Karate All American Awards · Karate All American Awards for 1998 will be awarded at the National Championships.
Registration · Pre-registration is strongly recommended. There is a $25 penalty for late registration. All registrations must be sent in 21 days before the event to avoid the late fee. In addition, late applications may go first in kata events based on the date applications are received.
Competitor Passes · You must send a passport size photo with your application. Each competitor who forwards his photo will receive a competitor pass. Competitors will be admitted free on days they do not compete with the pass. In addition, the pass contains valuable information on the divisions entered and a medical release form which must be completed and signed! If you send a self-addressed stamped envelope, we will return your pass by mail.
Birth Certificates · Birth certificates or other legal proof of age or citizenship must be sent in with the registration form. Once we have a copy on file, we will not require another one at future events.
Air Travel · Both the Akron/Canton airport and the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport service the Akron/Canton area. We will announce an official airlines at a later date.

Amateur Athletic Waiver and Release of Liability Return to top of page
In consideration of being allowed to participate in any way in The USA Karate Federation athletics/sports program, and related events and activities, the undersigned:
1. Agree that prior to participating, they will inspect the facilities and equipment to be used, and if they believe anything is unsafe, they will immediately advise their coach or supervisor or USA Karate personnel of such condition(s) and refuse to participate.
2. Acknowledge and fully understand that each participant will be engaging in activities that involve risk of serious injury, including permanent disability and death, and severe social and economic losses which might result not only from their own actions, inactions or negligence but the actions, inactions or negligence of others, the rules of play, or the condition of the premises or of any equipment used. Further, that there may be other risks not known to us or not reasonably foreseeable at this time.
3. Assume all the foregoing risks and accept personal responsibility for the damages following such injury, permanent disability or death.
4. Release, waive, discharge and covenant not to sue The USA Karate Federation, its affiliated clubs, regional sports organizations, their respective administrators, directors, agents, coaches, and other employees of the organization, other participants, sponsoring agencies, sponsors, advertisers, and, if applicable, owners and lessees of premises used to conduct the event, all of which are hereinafter referred to as "releasees" from any and all liability to each of the undersigned, his or her heirs and next of kin for any and all claims, demands, losses or damages on account of injury including death or damage to property, caused or alleged to be caused in whole or in part by the negligence of the releasee or otherwise,
